Helping you

feel at ease

We understand when you're considering counselling it can bring up a lot of questions. If there’s anything we haven’t covered, please don’t hesitate to get in touch — we’re here to help.

  • What is the difference between a counsellor, psychologist, and psychiatrist?

A professional counsellor provides support and guidance on personal, family, relationship, work, or mental health issues using recognised therapeutic counselling approaches. Some of these are informed by scientific psychological practices. Psychologists specialise in diagnosing and treating behavioural and mental health conditions based solely on scientificallly evidence-based practices. Psychiatrists have trained as a medical doctor and can prescribe medication. They have additional training in diagnosis and treatment of complex mental health disorders.

  • Are counselling sessions Medicare rebatable?

    The answer is no.

For a Medicare rebate a Mental Health Care Plan referral is required by a GP to a registered psychologist, social worker or occupational therapist only. There will be a gap fee payable under a MHCP, because Medicare does not fully rebate their professional fees.

Choosing private counselling does not require a GP referral. This ensures your mental health information remains confidential and is not recorded on the Government's health system. This can have insurance implications (increased premiums) because a mental health condition needs to be recorded to instigate a MHCP. This will often include a diagnosis of anxiety or depression. By law this diagnosis needs to be disclosed when making an insurance application.

  • Are sessions covered by private health insurance?

This service is not registered for private health care rebates.

  • How often should I attend sessions?

Session frequency is tailored to individual needs. Some clients attend 4–6 sessions, while others opt for longer-term support. Frequency can range from weekly to monthly, depending on your situation and goals.

  • What is the policy on cancellations or rescheduling?

We require at least 48 hours notice for cancellations or rescheduling without penalty. Less than 48 but more than 24 hours notice will incur a cancellation fee of 50% of the counselling fee. Less than 24 hours notice will incur a 100% fee. Non-attendance without notice will also incur a 100% fee. If you provide a medical certificate for illness on the day of the appointment, the fee may be waived.

  • Do you offer on-line or phone counselling?

Yes, sessions are available via phone or by Telehealth video-link. Appointments must be paid for when booking.

  • Can I bring my children to an appointment?

The answer is no. Many of the conversations we’ll have are not appropriate for children to hear. They may also be a distraction during the session. We kindly ask that you arrange childcare. If you can't find childcare at short notice due to child illness, then it is best to reschedule your session.

  • What if I feel counselling isn't working for me?

It’s completely okay to feel uncertain or a little uncomfortable during the counselling proces. Counselling is a personal journey, and sometimes it takes a little time to find the right approach. We encourage open, honest conversations. If something doesn’t feel right, please share your thoughts with your counsellor. Together, we can adjust the direction or explore other options that may be a better fit for you. Your comfort and progress matter most.

  • How long are records kept?

Records are usually retained for five years but may be responsibly disposed of after the client relationship ends.

We first contacted Counselling Resolutions to get an independent view on a number of issues in our marriage which we didn’t seem to be able to resolve ourselves.

We both found that the perspective that Rayma brought to our situation and the tools and resources that she made available to us helped our communication and allowed us to better work through issues.

We sought her advice again when other issues arose and had the same positive experience. While we continue to be faced with the challenges of marriage on an ongoing basis, we are more understanding and better equipped to work through issues and communicate more positively with each other. We couldn’t recommend Counselling Resolutions more highly to other couples who want to build a stronger relationship.”
